As scotch ages, it gets a focus and a refinement and the flavors harmonize. All the rough edges tone down and things mellow. Lagavulin 16 delivers that in a bottle that is under $100. There is something noble about this Scotch... It is not as smoky as Ardbeg or Laphroig, but more smoky than Talisker. This has a homogenious delivery of sweet peat smoke with a high enough phenol content to give pleasingly palatable hints of iodine. it is has some nougaty vanilla in the middle, and the finish is long (at least 20 minutes) with smoke, light brine and an undercurrent of orange marmalade. It is extremely well balanced and even more harmonious than Bowmore 12. This is my favorite scotch hands down. If you don't care for peat in scotch, buy the Glenlivet 12 or Glenmorangie original 10, but If you like Islay scotches this is the king.
